Hadestown: Teen Edition

Book, Music and Lyrics by Anias Mitchell

This intriguing and beautiful folk opera delivers a deeply resonant and defiantly hopeful theatrical experience. Following two intertwining love stories – that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of immortal King Hades and lady Persephone – Hadestown invites audiences on a hell-raising journey to the underworld and back. Inspired by traditions of classic American folk music and vintage New Orleans jazz, Mitchell’s beguiling sung-through musical pits industry against nature, doubt against faith, and fear against love.

Show Dedication

This show is dedicated to our beloved costume designer Ruth Enriquez-Bague who is retiring to Lake Arrowhead after 15 years of service to Paso High Theatre Company and over 20 years with PRJUSD. If you have seen any of our productions you have seen her brilliance all over our stage. She has spent endless hours with our students training them to be the best they can be. She has built costumes from Mazie LaBird to our very own Persephone’s costumes from scratch in her home. She shows love through intentional gifts and delicious treats. We are thankful everyday for her willingness to do over 20 spring musicals, plays and children’s shows. She has touched thousands of hearts with her mentorship.

We love you Ruth!

DIRECTOR'S NOTE

Being able to direct Hadestown is a dream come true for a true “theatre nerd” like myself. I first fell in love with the music. I was obsessed with all of the Fate’s songs and every Broadway trailer I could find. I then got to see a National Tour in LA in the second row. That was it. It was in my head that if I could ever license the show I would do it without a second thought. Then an email came that Concord Theatricals came out with Hadestown:Teen Edition. I locked it in within the hour. Needless to say, it is my honor to be directing this show. Hadestown has so much heart and creative license to tell the story. We tell this story in honor of the beautiful story it is and the artistry in the telling.

Our student production team is led by our Stage Manager, Sam Laucella. This is Sam’s fourth and final production as our Production Stage Manager. Sam is brilliant and I am so proud of him for following his dreams. He anticipates and problem solves like a magician. I am so fortunate to have directed four productions with Sam as my Stage Manager. He deserves so much more recognition as he also helps design the set, coordinate set changes, and is my right hand man for all creative ideas. He is a fantastic mentor to our cast and crew and he will be missed when he graduates. Sam is supported by Margot Klo, Mari Romero Florez and Cadence Hallquist backstage. We also have a fantastic team of talented technicians on our lighting, sound, and costume teams.

We are also thankful for our adults that have volunteered their talents. Courney Brock, our resident choreographer, is also our Theatre Assistant. She has done a fantastic job jumping in to support our department running extra rehearsals and really doing anything she can to help. Beyond assisting our department Courtney is an artistic genius in telling stories through dance. She has worked so hard and is extremely passionate about our show. We are also excited to have worked with our Vocal Director, Regan Rowins. Regan brings out the most incredible vocal talents out of our students. They have an amazing way of working with any level of student and creating the most magical sounds and you will be blown away by these teenagers. Ruth Enriquez-Bague, our costume designer for 15 years, has finally retired with Hadestown as her last production. We are so thankful for her time and energy with our theatre company over the years. She is one of my favorite people in the world and this show is dedicated to her. We have also had the assistance of Christopher Smith and his Intro to Technical Theatre class as they designed our lobby for the show. Mr. Smith has also been supervising rehearsals with Alicia Witman ensuring our students always have what they need during rehearsals. We are very grateful for their willingness to support PHTC.

Sam Mabry, our PHTC Intern has returned to us and was able to assist in the rigging of the dancing lamps you will see in our show. Thank you to Greg Hamlin for supporting our show. We appreciate you loaning us your trusses and being willing to do so much more. Scott Saunders again created our amazing graphic artwork for our program, slideshow, posters, and even our shirt designs. A special thank you to Courtney Brock and Ruth Emmons for helping organize and feed our cast and crew during our long tech week. Thank you to all of our families that supported our Family Meal! We appreciate your efforts in supporting this production.

Finally I would like to thank my family for supporting me while putting together this production. My wife Jaime is my go to problem solver and I am thankful for a different set of eyes on all of our difficult projects. Jayce, Jesse and Grandma Becky, you are the best support system and I am so thankful for you all. Boys, I don’t want to embarrass you or pressure you, but I do hope you consider being a part of PHTC one day. I think you both would be an incredible part of this department.

Paso High Theatre Company is very thankful for you, our audience. Your support of these students and our program is remarkable and we are all truly grateful.
